Life is chaotic, reality can sometimes be somewhat overwhelming. Between our jobs, personal relationships, projects, children and every other activity we have going on, we eventually need to pause in our busy lives and seek some quiet time for relaxing, maybe a little meditation, aromatherapy, silence, quieting our monkey mind or to just go within and listening to our own voice. This is what Sacred Space is about.
This is safe and secure place, where you can be you, reflect, feel whatever you need to feel, seek higher guidance or just plain unwind.
In this article, you’ll find a few answers on how to go about creating this space in your home.
Find a spot in your home where you can create this space. Have it be clean, decluttered, away from where you work or places with too much traffic . If you don’t have an extra empty room available (not many of us do!), you can choose a corner, a table, an armoir, whatever resonates with you, you can get really creative with this.
After you’ve chosen your space, it’s time to set the mood and tone of your space, this is also a good point to get creative in. If you feel like painting it a certain color, adding drapes, tapestries, images that you find soothing, or even adding a vision board is okay. Adding colors that help you reach that state of tranquility is something to keep in mind.
Next step is building an altar. Now, this applies for whatever religion or spiritual practice you may have. What you put on YOUR altar, is YOUR decision and no one else’s. Place objects that are important to you and that bring in good energy. Add those that make you truly connect to yourself, nature and your spirituality.
You can add individual crystals, crystal grids, scented candles, incense burners, plants, flowers, prayer beads, tarot or oracle decks, palo santo, sage, essential oils, whatever you feel connected to. You can even have a themed altar or several!
For example, I have 3: My ocean inspired altar filled with seashells, sand, ocean-themed tarot decks, paintings of the sea and such. My other one is my spirit guides/nature altar, which has plants, feathers, my spirit animal (Owl) as Guardian, candles and some crystals and decks. The last altar is my abundance altar, which is set up according to Feng Shui. Lots of Citrine, Clear Quartz and Amethyst. I also have a special made Ox lamp (my Chinese horoscope sign) which has a green light.
For the final touch, add a rug, throwpillows, a chair, blankets, whatever you will need to get comfortable and cozy in this new Sacred Space.
Sacred Spaces are great for doing personal, moon phase or any other type rituals or ceremonies. They allow the energy to flow, that’s were we reconnect and tune in. Like most things in life, they too need cleansing (physical and energetic) from time to time. Remember that clutter exists both in physical and emotional form.
If you’re going to be doing any type of ritual or ceremony, I suggest you read the next tips on how to prepare yourself and your Sacred Space for them.
Cleansing Your Energy
To prepare your physical and energetic body for your ceremony or ritual, you can go with one of these:
🌟 Take a bath or shower in order to give your body a boost and some relaxing time. This always has a recharging effect, not just cleansing. Some of the things that can be used for your bath are natural herbs, sea salt or essential oils. Here are some ideas on which to use:
Herbs: Lavender, Eucaliptus, Chamomile, Lemongrass, Thyme, Rosemary.
Essential Oils: Rose, Palo Santo, Lavender, Sage, Myrrh, Lemon, Juniper, Jasmine.
You can also include some lemon or orange peels to the mix, very aromatic and energizing.
🌟 Use a selenite or crystal quartz and pass it along your entire body, starting from the head down to the toes. Envision yourself covered in white light.
🌟 If you have rose water – you can spray some on your body as you visualize it cleansing your aura and energetic body.
🌟 Smudge yourself with Sage or Palo Santo – make sure the smoke covers your entire body at some point.
🌟 Holy Water – Spray or sprinkle this all over your body as you ask for your Angels’ aid to help you clear negative energy out.
While you are cleansing yourself with any of the above, you can say: “I allow this (bath/rose water/quartz/smoke/Holy Water) to clear any and all energies that do not serve me and those which aren’t mine. And so, it is done”.
Cleansing Your Sacred Space
After you’ve cleaned your energetic and physical body, it’s time to cleanse and revitalize your Sacred Space. Fortunately, a lot of the techniques used for the personal cleanse, can also be used for spaces (mind the sea salt!).
🌟 Smudge with Palo Santo or Sage – After you’ve smudged, open up a window so that smoke leaves the room as well as any negative energy.
🌟 Meditation cleanse – You can do a visualization meditation in order to cleanse your altar or Sacred Space.
🌟 Sea salt spray – Spray some on or around the space to be cleared but be careful, some of your tools or sacred objects may have a negative reaction to salt.
🌟 Holy Water – Spray and call to your Angels for divine assistance.
🌟 Selenite – My favorite crystal to keep close to my Sacred Space, it dispells negative energy from the environment and your energetic body and this one in particular, self cleanses, all it needs is a little recharging from time to time.
As you are doing this, you can say: “Cleanse this space of negative energy, thoughts and intentions. Let this space invite warmth, light and higher guidance into my life. This is a safe place for me and for that, I am thankful.”
Change whatever you feel like, whenever you feel like it. Even this space will change, evolve or grow as you do, so it’s ok to switch it up when it feels right. The last bit of advice I would give, is to keep a journal in your space. You can use this one to keep track of Tarot readings, feelings, intentions, resolutions and a lot more. For me, it’s one of the best ways of really going within and get to know yourself better.
Now, go and enjoy your much needed Sacred Space!
